Rebels bounced from first round of NCAAs
By Bud L. Ellis
When UNLV scored 70 or more points, good things happen. When they don’t …
The Runnin’ Rebels were held under 70 points in their first-round NCAA Tournament matchup with Northern Iowa on Thursday night. The result: not good for UNLV. Ali Farokhmanesh’s 3-pointer with 4.9 seconds left sent the Rebels home for the season in a 69-66 loss.
UNLV (25-9) had battled back to tie the game at 66-66 on Oscar Bellfield’s 3-pointer with 37 seconds to go. After Northern Iowa broke the tie, the Rebels had one last chance but could not get a shot off before the buzzer sounded.
Northern Iowa succeeded in slowing the tempo. The Rebels struggled from the field, hitting on just 43 percent of their shots.
Matt Shaw scored 12 of his team-high 14 points in the first half. Bellfield and Tre’Von Willis each scored 13 points.
